Savage Seas in surprise win in QBred two year old final

By Harnesslink ·

Savage Seas (Captain Treacherous) caused a major upset when he defeated his more fancied rivals in the Group 3 $50,000 QBred Final for two year old colts and geldings at Albion Park on Saturday night.

Prior to his win, Savage Seas had only started on the one occasion for 4th placing in his heat on 19 May finishing eight metres behind Yipee Kiyay.

In last night’s Final Savage Seas was given the one out and one back trail by driver Nathan Dawson as hot favourite Bet He’s Sweet worked to the lead with the well tried Bettor One racing outside the leader.

In a spread out event Bet He’s Sweet looked to be in control but Bettor One who had done all the work seemed to be travelling better on the final bend. However Savage Seas was poised right behind and he eased out to issue a challenge at the top of the home straight. Bettor One moved clear but he was no match to the finishing burst of Savage Seas who scored by a metre from Bettor One who will be better for that effort with Bet He’s Sweet weakening for third.

SAVAGE SEAS 30 MAY REPLAY

Savage Seas is trained and raced by his breeder Ben Crosby. His dam Morethanmeetstheeye was a more than a capable mare around Albion Park winning 13 races and going 1.56.2.

And at stud she’s been a great producer with progeny such as Captain Shuffles (19 wins and 1.50.8) and Frankie Ferocious (16 wins and 1.49.2).

Savage Seas is a full brother to Captain Shuffles and Frankie Ferocious so he looks to have a bright future.

There were no such surprises in the $50,000 two year old fillies Final where Shine Like Me (Hunstville) showed too much toe for her opponents.

A prohibitive favourite Shine Like Me bounced straight to the lead for driver Pete McMullen and that was the end of the race. Tactique had the run of the race behind the leader and she tried to make a race of it.

But her efforts were in vain as she finished just under seven metres from the winner and Jewel Reason in third placing.

SHINE LIKE ME 30 MAY REPLAY

Shine Like Me was a special winner for McMullen. His wife Chantal Turpin bred the filly who also won a Heat and seems destined for a promising future.

Diamond Solitaire the unraced dam of Shine Like Me has a yearling filly by Catch The Fire.

The stable was on fire in the evening when their star pacer The Janitor resumed with an effortless win in the Open event and then their three year old filly Stripes won the Three year old QBred Final.

Then to top things off their promising four year old Fernco Nel (Vincent) raced into contention for the Rising Sun with a strong win leading all the way in the Junior Free For All.
