Fire and Passion simply too strong in QBred Three Year Old Final

By Thomas H. Hicks ·

Queensland’s leading two year old of last season Fire And Passion (Always B Miki) returned to form with a vengeance in his hollow win in the $50,000 Group 3 QBred three year old colts and geldings Final at Albion Park on Saturday evening.

This time in at his only two starts Fire And Passion had finished second when a hot favourite including in the QBred Heat but once he drew the coveted pole punters had no hesitation in installing him a warm favourite.

And the stylish colt didn’t let them down. Nothing could go with him early as he easily held the lead and from then onwards the race was as good as over.

Grant Dixon was given an armchair run in the lead but nonetheless kept the pace brisk. Other contenders Barsby was caught wide early while Sitting On Eight took a trail behind Fire And Passion with Ideal Bronski taking a one out and one back trail.

But he was off and gone in the back straight and running his last quarter in 27.8 seconds Fire And Passion had just under eleven metres to spare over Ideal Bronski with Barsby a battling third.

Raced by Ben Seymour, Fire And Passion is hitting form at the right time and may be considered for the Rising Sun although that may be ambitious at this stage, however he looks well placed in the Queensland Derby against the three year olds.

And in the $50,000 fillies division classy filly Stripes (Tiger Tara) proved her worth a first class front running exhibition to demolish her rivals.

In fact the only two serious contenders were Stripes and her stablemate Ruby Rhayne Bow driven by stable foreman Tom Callaghan.

Pete McMullen on Stripes was out wide. Ruby Rhayne Bow showing her customary early speed went to the early lead but Callaghan surrendered the lead to Stripes in order to take the trail behind Stripes.

The remainder of the field had trouble trying to keep up with Stripes running 28.8 seconds  for the third quarter. The only issue was whether Ruby Rhayne Bow could present itself as a danger as she peeled off the fence on the final bend.

But Stripes was full of running and she simply had too much zip to defeat Ruby Rhyane Bow by just over seven metres while Queen Tide who was a fair way back on the rails finishing on strongly to grab third.

Stripes ran 1.53.1 compared to Fire And Passion’s effort in going 1.51.5. Stripes galloped out when she contested the New South Wales Oaks Heat over a month ago but she is much better suited on her home track.
