Hooray Philtra upsets the favourites
Hooray Philtra (Betterthancheddar) proved that he can match it with the better classes when he surprised better credentialled harness racing candidates in taking out the Hygain Edge Free For All at Melton on Saturday evening.

Trainer Emma Stewart held the key to the event with Some American and Storms Collide battling favouritism ahead of Catch A Wave who was on the second row. But there was some quiet specking for Hooray Philtra.
HOORAY PHILTRA 8 AUG REPLAY
Things looked promising early for Hooray Philtra as he showed dazzling speed to race to the front. However James Herbertson was content to take the trail as Some American who had won his previous two races at Melton took up the running while stable mate Storms Collide had to race outside the leader.
Once again Catch A Wave didn’t seem to have a great deal of luck as he was shuffled back four on the rails.
Some American looked to be the one to beat as they turned for home but once an inside run opened up he sprinted quickly to race clear of both Some American and Storms Collide who fought on well for third.
The win obviously meant something special for Herbertson
I never thought it would be with this horse I ahave driven him many seasons with Mick but a change of scenery and he’s really thrived. He’s a lovely horse he’s great to do everything with. It’s just very humbling tonight. It’s nice to win a really nice race on a Saturday night with one that’s trained at home.
The middle half wasn’t strong the 27 and a half he did quite easy he’s very quick off the gate as you saw. He was never out of his comfort zone there. The middle half was very easy. I was quite worried I wasn’t going to pick him up (Some American). But 26.7 (final quarter) and I’ve made up half a length on him I’m really happy with him.
We definitely haven’t found the bottom of him just yet. But we’ll keep him ticking along.
I like racing him over the shorts I think he’s turned into a really good miler. He follows the speed really well he’s doing a great job I’m really happy with him.
