Alert Bay breaks through for overdue win

Talented but luckless colt Alert Bay (Downbytheseaside) finally had the breaks go his way with a determined win in the Sky Racing three year old at Menangle on Saturday evening.

The subject of a confident betting plunge Alert Bay was forced to do it hard as he was left racing outside the leader. However the second favourite Elector was engaged in a torrid early speed battle with Lochinvar Marcello and in doing so spent a great deal of energy.

Alert Bay took up the running at the 400 metre mark and driver James Rattray sent him clear. The outsider Cowboy Culture gave chase but Alert Bay kept finding something and in a tight finish held off Cowboy Culture by a neck with Eye Can Ear Amour coming from near last for third.

ALERT BAY REPLAY 8 AUG

Alert Bay was runner up earlier in the season to Zeus Lightning in a Heat of the New South Wales Derby but missed the Final.

He’d finished a close second at Menangle at his previous two starts so the writing was on the wall for him to go one better last night.

Kabibi the dam of Alert Bay was a more than capable race mare with seven race wins and a fastest time of 1.55.3. Apart from Alert Bay she has a two year old filly by Always B Miki.

Alert Bay can only get better with racing and he is bound to steadily progress through the classes to eventually tackle the feature classics.
