Father-son combination looks for biggest win

By Harnesslink ·

Another Fireball will have her last start for a while, and attempt to give father-son combination David and Blake Micallef their biggest win in the Leeton Pacers Cup on New Years Day.

When 18-year-old Blake started his driving career this year it prompted his father to go and find a couple more horses, lifting his stable from half a dozen to near 20 horses.

Another Fireball was one of the purchases and has won three races since joining the Micallef stable and has been put in foal.

"When you are starting out as a driver you need support, so when Blake got his licence I decided to get some more horses to get him started," trainer David Micallef said.

"I had been doing a fair bit of pre-training, breeding a couple and always had half-a-dozen or so in work.

"Another Fireball has been a good horse and I think she will be around 100 days in foal when she runs on Monday.

"She has given Blake three wins and quite likes Leeton. She has the second-row draw to overcome but she is going well enough."

The Micallefs will also have Alisons Jet, Special Thoughts and Kirra Kid at Leeton.

"It has been a good place for us, we have been there three times and never missed out on having a place getter," Micallef said.

"I think there are a couple of fair chances.

"It will give Blake a chance to show how well he drives. The aim is for him to get to the stage where he gets a couple more outside drives around here."
