The Lazarus Effect wins Flying Stakes

The Lazarus Effect wins Flying Stakes

By Nicholas Oakes ·

While Marketplace got back on the inside, trainer driver Bob Butt took full advantage and lead with The Lazarus Effect (Lazarus) to cling on to beat a fast finishing Marketplace in today’s $60,000 Group Two NZB Airfreight Ashburton Flying Stakes.

“It just worked out perfect, everything about it and luckily he was good enough to hold on,” Butt said.

Making his usual fast beginning The Lazarus Effect shot to the lead and got away with some soft early sectionals.

“When Turtle (Tim Williams driving Bettor Anvil) pulled up alongside of me he (The Lazarus Effect) got on the bit and felt real good. He got floatie late.”

The gaps opened up late for Marketplace and he ran a stunning last 400 metres, but just wasn’t able to nail The Lazarus Effect.

The winning time was 2-56.7 with the last 800 cut out in 52.8 and 400 metres in 25.1 so the run home for Marketplace would have been off the charts.

Although the win was extremely satisfying for Butt he knows the Go Media New Zealand Cup next month is another step up.

“He’s still going to have to improve again, so hopefully the next couple of weeks go good and he can.”
