Alexandra Park takes centre stage on Friday night with two elite Group 1 features headlining one of the strongest Auckland meetings of the season.

The $100,000 ANZAC Cup brings together the country’s best trotters in a standing-start showdown, while the $100,000 Taylor Mile shapes as a fascinating tactical sprint with local stars taking on proven Australian class.

Barrier draws, early tempo and race positioning look crucial in both features, with no shortage of depth across the card.

Race 6 – ANZAC Cup (Group 1)

$100,000 – 2200m Stand

A compact but high-quality field where manners and early positioning could decide everything. Several genuine winning hopes line up, but one seasoned warrior gets the nod.

Oscar Bonavena (6)

Still racing at a high level and his recent Cambridge efforts behind elite Australians were full of merit. Strong distance stats and class edge make him the top selection.

Meant To Be (5)

Ultra-consistent and looked sharp beating Oscar Bonavena when last at Alexandra Park. Maps to get a key role in the running and must be respected.

Hillbilly Blues (2)

Talented trotter who commands respect from a handy draw. If he steps cleanly and lands handy, he can absolutely win.

Mr Love (8)

Honest type who keeps producing and never misses many cheques at this venue. Good each way and First 4 value.

Ya Rite Darl (9)

May need luck from the unruly but has been racing well enough to sneak into the minors.

Selections:

Oscar Bonavena / Meant To Be / Hillbilly Blues / Mr Love / Ya Rite Darl

Race 7 – Taylor Mile (Group 1)

$100,000 – 1609m Mobile Pace

One of New Zealand harness racing’s iconic sprint races and this year’s edition looks wide open after a tricky draw for several key chances.

Speed will be on from the outset, and the first 300 metres could shape the result.

Sooner The Bettor (3)

Maps to spear forward and should get every chance to control the race. Went close over this trip at Cambridge and looks perfectly placed to go one better.

The Lazarus Effect (4)

In top form and returns off a sharp trial win. Drawn right alongside the likely leader and looks a major threat.

Swayzee (8)

The proven Australian class runner. Wide draw adds complexity but sheer quality means he cannot be overlooked.

Doo You Want Me (1)

Inside gate gives place claims and he fought strongly in defeat last time. Could get the run of the race.

Got The Chocolates (9)

Flying this campaign and brings a strong form line north. Dangerous if gaps come at the right time.

Selections:

Sooner The Bettor / The Lazarus Effect / Swayzee / Doo You Want Me / Got The Chocolates

Southern Spotlight Falls on Invercargill

While Alexandra Park commands plenty of attention on Friday night, the south gets its moment earlier in the day with Invercargill hosting the $100,000 Diamond Creek Farm / SBSR 2YO Classic (Group 1).

The juvenile feature over 2200m brings together six promising youngsters, several of whom are unbeaten, making this one of the more intriguing two-year-old contests of the season.

With lightly raced babies still learning their craft, manners, gate speed and race experience could prove just as important as raw talent.

Race 5 – Diamond Creek Farm / SBSR 2YO Classic (Group 1)

$100,000 – 2YO Mobile Pace – 2200m

A small but talented field where several runners bring unbeaten records into the race. Expect plenty of tactical interest early.

Travel Agent (5)

Looked highly professional winning at Addington and did it with authority. Plenty of upside and shapes as the one with the most natural progression. Top selection despite the draw.

Chiggsy (3)

Already a Group race winner after his gritty Kindergarten Stakes success. Drawn to get every chance and clearly one of the major hopes.

Roger That (2)

Two starts for two wins and looked smart at Winton. Drawn ideally and likely to be heavily supported again. Must include.

Patriot (6)

Has chased well in both starts and appears to be improving with racing. Tougher draw but can still feature.

Others

On Ya Bike (1) gets the ace draw and can run a cheeky race into the placings.

Selections:

Travel Agent / Chiggsy / Roger That / Patriot
