Senses – A Star in the Making?
Senses – A Star in the Making?
It may be premature to start making forecasts but lightly raced filly Senses (American Ideal) gives every indication that she is headed for better things and that was reinforced with her outstanding harness racing win in the Cawborne Construction Three year old Pace at Menangle on Saturday night.

Ideally drawn in two, Senses showed early speed and was beaten out by Soho Washington but driver Will Rixon allowed the filly to settle down and then she whizzed around to take the lead. Once there she was coasting in the lead with Nocturnal caught outside the leader and the capable Bettorleftalone with the one out and one back trail.
At the business end of the race, Senses ran her last two quarters in 27.5 and 26.4 seconds putting her rivals to the sword. She ran out an effortless winner six metres ahead of Nocturnal who showed plenty of heart in battling on for second while Bettorleftalone was close by for third.
Her overall mile rate of 1.51.6 was a career best for the lightly raced filly. There’s been a lot of expectation about Senses due to her being royally bred but trainer David Thorn has taken his time with Senses and was not at all concerned about missing the classics as a two year old. His patience is paying off as Senses is now regarded as one of the best fillies currently racing.
SENSES 16 MAY REPLAY
She certainly caught the eye when making up ground on the brilliant Arrhythmia in the Final of the New South Wales Oaks.
Even so Thorn is still charting a planned and cautious approach with Senses and at this stage she will go to the Queensland Oaks on 18 July. After that she is likely to contest the New South Wales Breeders Challenge later in the year.
Senses win gave Thorn and Rixon a winning double with the highly promising Cynical (Bettors Delight) winning his fifth race on end with a well timed run to take out the Society 389 Charity Club Pace earlier in the evening.
Cynical was mid field with favourite Rewatch in the lead but he unleashed a strong burst to score an impressive ten metre win. It was a popular win as the four year old gelding is raced by Charlie Sammut and his family.
