Sea Salt’s purple patch of form continues with feature success

By Standardbred Canada ·

Diminutive grey mare Sea Salt (Downbytheseaside) scored her third win in a row with a gritty win in the $15,000 Kevin and Kay Seymour Final at Globe Derby on Saturday evening.

A warm basis on the basis of her stylish heat win the week before Sea Salt was caught four wide early before driver Kevin Weidenbach before going up on the outside of the leader Deuce Coupe and that’s where she stayed.

Despite having a hard run Sea Salt poured on the pressure in the back straight to forge clear. It helped that her main danger Lochinvar Magic was at the rear of the field and had to go three wide at the bell lap and he was spotting the leaders too big a start.

In fact it was Don Arthur who burst out of the pack in pursuit as they straightened. But Sea Salt dug in and with Weidenbach urging her on Sea Salt she comfortably held off Don Arthur by just over four metres with Lochinvar Magic in third. Her win was made even more credible in that she raced with a flat tyre after the sulky contacted.

Trainer Tyson Linke explained.

It happened at around the 300 metre mark when she was getting clear and to sprint away. Kevin noticed that the left tyre was totally flat and exposed.

In her win last night she rated 1.56.

Sea Salt is raced by Tara-Shae who bred the mare and brother Tyson is the trainer making this all in the family. Last year Sea Salt had a short spell without much success at Emma Stewart’s stables but since returning to Tyson Linke the mare’s form has been impeccable with six wins and three placings at her nine appearances to date this season.

However Sea Salt’s win has presented a dilemma for the Linke family.

Linke added

She’s now reached free for all class and there’s not much further that she can go apart from the open class. We’re going to have to sit down and think about it. We’ll give her a few days off and then see. Our dilemma also extends to her elder half sister Coco Mia who has now retired but we’re still trying to work out who we should send her to.

One issus that Linke is sure about is the younger yearling colt by Cattlewash is a grey like Sea Salt despite the breeding records saying otherwise.

Yes he’s certainly very grey and we’re breaking him in and he’s coming along nicely.

Its hard to know how far Sea Salt will go but certainly in South Australia she should eventually acquit herself in open company as she can sprint and stay. One thinks of the South Australian Pacing Cup later this season but although Linke hasn’t seriously considered it yet he admitted that it’s one race he would love to win.

As a local South Australian it would certainly mean a lot to win our premier race.

Maybe Sea Salt could help fulfil that dream.
