Race Of The Week 6th August 2026
There were scenes rarely witnessed on a racetrack at Menangle on Saturday night as a blanket of thick fog turned the Kevin Newman Free For All into one of the more interesting races of the season.
For much of the 1609-metre journey, the field appeared as little more than ghostly silhouettes disappearing into the mist, with spectators only able to catch fleeting glimpses of the runners until they emerged into view over the final 100 metres.
When they finally burst from the fog, it was Glitter Aint Gold producing a spectacular finishing burst.
Settled deep on the pegs for much of the journey by Jett Turnbull, the Nathan Turnbull-trained gelding angled to the outside in the straight and charged home down the centre of the track, sweeping over the top to score a narrow but deserved victory over Betterthancash NZ, with Lux Aeterna finishing third.
The five-year-old son of Bling It On stopped the clock in 1:51.9, overcoming the rain-affected conditions to claim the Listed feature after launching his run from well back in the field.
While the victory was impressive, it was the extraordinary conditions that made the race unforgettable.
It was a finish worthy of the conditions—Glitter Aint Gold seemingly materialising from nowhere to snatch victory in one of the most visually dramatic races seen at Menangle in a while.
