Port Pirie’s Radiant feature

Port Pirie’s Radiant feature

By Adam Hamilton ·

Harness racing history will be made this Saturday evening when South Australia’s first slot race the $100,000 Radiant is staged at Port Pirie’s circuit Phoenix Park.

It’s a real coup for Port Pirie which outside of Globe Derby has regular meetings in South Australia along with Mount Gambier and Gawler. And its exactly the shot in the arm that harness racing in South Australia needs if it is to generate national interest.

A bumper eleven event program gets under way just after 5.30pm local time with the two heats of the Radiant being Races 4 and 5.

National interest in the event is exemplified by the presence of interstate drivers Jack Laugher, Alex Ashwood, Seaton Grima and Angus Garrard. They’ll be tackling the locals namely Wayne Hill, Danielle Hill and leading trainer Ryan Hryhorec.

Hryhorec has three runners in the first heat namely Seaside Lady, Chase The Stars and Miss Out. In the second heat he has Fe Fe On Fire and Keto. Fellow trainer Aaron Bain has Mikis Beauty and Reach The Peak in the first heat with Nairobi in Heat two.

Australia’s most prominent owner Mick Boots has taken a slot showing his support for the feature.

The $100,000 Final is programmed as Race 9 at 9.41pm with the $16,000 Consolation scheduled at 10.41pm. The meeting concludes with the APG Adelaide Port Pirie Two Year old classic Final.

The 20 paid up slot holders are as follows:

  • ABR Bloodstock
  • Boots Properties
  • Sam Hill Racing
  • Horsnell Racing
  • SEN
  • Jalat Group
  • The Mount Crew
  • 1800 Got Junk
  • Platinum Trade Services
  • Hryhorec Racing
  • APD Racing
  • TH Racing
  • The Port Pirie Business Alliance
  • Solomontown Football players
  • Reece Moore Racing
  • Ryan Racing
  • Gerardi Racing
  • PC Brodie
  • Lacor Limited
  • The Villeva Family

It’s a rare opportunity for a regional racing club to be at the forefront of the national racing scene and not surprisingly much of Port Pirie has swung behind the club in ensuring that the meeting is a success and a blueprint for such future events.
