Pacing For Pink kicks off for South Australia

Pacing for Pink the annual charitable initiative within the Australian harness racing industry dedicated to raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research and the McGrath Foundation started off in South Australia last night with the running of the $11,000 Pacing For Pink Two Year Old.

The two year old was an action packed event with first starter Pewrify (Bling It On) a hot favourite on the strength of two trial wins in the eight horse field.

Given time to settle down by driver Wayne Hill, Pewrify went around the field to race past Seabreeze Lad. The well supported South Aussie Star was four back on the rails with Cecil Peak one out and one back.

Pewrify cleared away in the back straight but couldn’t shake off Seabreeze Lad who issued a spirited challenge on straightening. But kept going by Hill, Pewrify had enough in reserve to defeat Seabreeze Lad by just under four metres with Cecil Peak in third. Pewrify rated 2.00.7 for the 1800 metres and is trained by Peter Bain for Summit Bloodstock.

The win completed a treble for Hill as earlier he was successful with Ashante Prince (Sweet Lou) and then with the much improved Don Capitano (Captaintreacherous).

Throughout the month of May there will be a number of corporate sponsorships and community events all in a worthy cause. Included in some of initiatives are:

  • Leanne Ewen who works for Harness Racing South Australia is walking a kilometre for every kilometre that Danielle Hill drives in races in May.
  • There will be a HRSA & BOTRA fundraising event at Globe Derby Park on 30 May.
  • A South Australia Female Drivers race will take place on 23 May for mares only to be run over 1800 metres.
  • Most of South Australia’s main drivers have organised sponsors for the month. Nineteen drivers are being sponsored thanks to the generosity of various institutions.
