One Horse delivers Campbell's twin milestones
Brandon Campbell has spent 25 years building win totals into the thousands, but it took one gelding to hand him two of the biggest numbers in his harness racing career, four months apart.
The Calgary-based trainer-driver picked up his 1,000th career training win on Sunday, July 19, opening day of the summer meet at The Track On 2. The horse doing the honours was Standinmyshadow (Shadow Play), a lightly raced three-year-old gelding owned by Calgary’s Raymond Henry. Sent out from post 7 in a $3,700 claiming pace, Standinmyshadow upset favourite Bet On Amelia by a length in 1:59.3, paying $16.30.
It’s the kind of race that never makes a highlight reel on its own, a mid-week claimer with a mid-priced winner. But for Campbell it closed out a training career milestone that took 25 years to reach.
It wasn’t the first time that horse had put Campbell’s name in the record book. Standinmyshadow’s maiden win, a four-length romp in 1:58.1 at Century Downs on April 18, was also Campbell’s 3,000th career driving win.
Two career milestones, one horse, the same trainer-driver in the bike both times.

Campbell’s numbers tell the story of a career built steadily rather than in one big rush. He picked up his first training win in Lethbridge, Alta., back in 2001, and didn’t start driving competitively until 2003. Since then his stable has banked more than $7.1 million in purses. His best season came in 2023, when he sent out 92 winners for close to $950,000 in earnings, the kind of year that puts a stable firmly among the province’s leading operations.
He’s not slowing down either. Campbell currently sits among the top five trainers in Canada by UTRS, rated at 0.357, a number that reflects a stable still performing at a high level a quarter-century into his career, not one coasting on past totals.
None of that changes what made July 19 stand out. Milestone wins are usually a moment for one number to land, a driver ticking over 3,000 or a trainer reaching four figures, and then the card moves on to the next race. Campbell got both from the one horse, on two different days, at two different tracks, without either result being planned around the number.
Standinmyshadow, for his part, has now delivered more history in two starts than most horses manage in a career. Whether he adds a third milestone to his resume remains to be seen, but Raymond Henry’s gelding has already done more than enough to earn his spot in Campbell’s story.
