Ashburton takes centre stage on Sunday with a strong winter programme highlighted by two feature races carrying $25,000 purses and a quality Group 3 juvenile fillies contest earlier on the harness racing card.

Several progressive types clash with seasoned campaigners across the afternoon and race shape looks set to play a major role, particularly in the sprint free-for-all where tactical speed and barrier positions could prove decisive.

Race 5 – Helen Pope Memorial 2YO Fillies Stakes (Group 3)

$40,000 – 1700m Mobile Pace

A smart field of juvenile fillies lines up here and several come through strong early performances or impressive recent trials.

Beware The Storm (5)

Strong winner at Addington after sitting parked and still proving too tough late. Looks highly progressive and capable of stepping up again despite another awkward draw.

Nella Keenan (4)

Has done little wrong in both starts to date and arguably deserves a breakthrough win. Drawn to secure a soft run and should get every chance.

All Torque (9)

Brings strong winning trial form into her debut assignment and profiles as one with upside. The draw makes things tougher but she has enough ability to measure up immediately.

Devil Woman (1)

Caught late after controlling the race at Addington and now gains the ace draw. Looks capable of giving a huge sight again.

Ashes Of Midnight (7)

Two tidy efforts to begin her career and she continues to improve with racing. Must be included in wider combinations.

Selections:

Beware The Storm / Nella Keenan / All Torque / Devil Woman / Ashes Of Midnight

Race 9 – Rakaia Seed Cleaning Free For All

$25,000 – 1700m Mobile Pace

A fascinating sprint feature where tactical speed and race position will be crucial from the outset. Several proven open-class performers line up and the tempo looks genuine throughout.

Sideshow Bruce (2)

Outstanding fresh-up campaign so far and his latest effort was full of merit despite being run down late. Drawn ideally and looks the horse to beat.

Da Vinci (3)

Last start had next-up winner written all over it after hitting the line strongly. Maps perfectly and should receive strong market support.

Franco Sinatra (6)

Continues to race consistently and his sprint trip record commands plenty of respect. Likely to press forward early and give a bold sight.

Mo’unga (7)

Forget the latest run where luck played no part. His best form measures right up in this field and he can bounce back sharply.

Iron Brigade (1)

Honest performer who continues to race well against quality opposition. Drawn to get the perfect economical run throughout.

Selections:

Sideshow Bruce / Da Vinci / Franco Sinatra / Mo’unga / Iron Brigade
