Moonwriter rockets to Preferred victory

Moonwriter dominated the first Summerside Raceway Preferred 2 Pace of the harness racing season on Monday, the track’s opening day.

David Dowling sent the nine-year-old forward off the gate, and Moonwriter grabbed it easily from post four as the field of five entered the first turn. The horse created a four-length gap as he paced fractions of :28.3, :57.3, and 1:26.1 on the front end.

Moonwriter’s foes edged closer in the final quarter, but the son of Sportswriter‘s win was never in doubt. He cruised to the line two lengths clear of Soccer Hanover (Corey Macpherson), who was second, in 1:55.2. Heart And Soul (Jason Hughes) rode the pocket and finished third. The winner paid $6.

Moonwriter is trained by Colin Johnson for Debbie Element of Village Green. The horse has won 24 of his 176 starts and earned $391,515 lifetime. His victory came in his first start at the Summerside, PEI oval.

Also on the card, trainer Darla Maceachern took her first career victory in the opener with W C Little Willie, who wired the field. Corey Macpherson drove the six-year-old Westwardho Hanover gelding. Maceachern also owns the horse.

Summerside Raceway handled $40,680 over 10 races on its first card of the season. Its next program is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ADT on Sunday, May 30.
