Daddy Let Me Drive on the engine at Inverness

Daddy Let Me Drive (I Can Only Imagine) defeated favourite Elm Grove Qwiggly in a lengthy front-end harness racing battle to take the Winners-Over at Inverness Raceway on Wednesday (Jul. 5).

Rodney Gillis directed Daddy Let Me Drive to the front from the inside post and took an easy  :31.1 opening quarter. Elm Grove Qwiggly (Redmond Doucet) went on the attack approaching the half in 1:01.3, but Daddy Let Me Drive wasn’t in a giving mood.

The lead tightened to a quarter-length by three-quarters in 1:30.3 as the pair battled on, and they turned for home nose-to-nose. Elm Grove Qwiggly appeared to have the upper hand, but the taxing trip caught up with him, and Daddy Let Me Drive outlasted the challenger to prevail by a half-length in 1:59.4.

Elm Grove Qwiggly was an admirable second. JJ Scarlet (Donald Gillis) was a length-and-a-half back in third.

DADDY LET ME DRIVE REPLAY

It was the 31st career victory for Daddy Let Me Drive, who has earned $149,649 in 184 career outings. Donald Beaton owns and trains the nine-year-old gelding.

Inverness Raceway will race next on Wednesday, Jul. 12.
