Ezra Kai (Tennotrump), the winner of the Trotters Carousel at Menangle, and who now been successful in three of his last 10 harness racing starts, has a pedigree of more than usual interest in that he represents a doubling up of the blood of the Hall of Fame broodmare Maori Miss.

Bred by central Victorian enthusiast Michael Pangrazio Jnr, the four-year-old gelding is one of the third last crop of a top trotting colt and classic winner in Tennotrump, A Go Go Lauxmont horse who has now been withdrawn from stud duties.
From restricted stud chances Tennotrump sired 53 individual winners from 77 starters including the dual Vicbred champion Brunelleschi, the Group 1 winner Deltasun, the 3YO Trotting Colt of the Year Magicool and the cups winner Spud. His dam, Maori Trump (Overtrick-Maori Miss), has also produced a champion trotter in Noopy Kiosk.
Amaori Spur, the dam of Ezra Kai, was only lightly raced but she left three winners from four foals to race. By Pegasus Spur, Amaori Spur was a half-sister by Sundon to Sweetasay, dam of the outstanding racemare Pink Galahs, a winner of 18 races and $333,549 in stakes including the Bill Collins Mile twice and the Victoria Trotters Derby and Oaks.
The next dam, Maori’s Glory, was also a top racemare numbering the Vicbred 2YO and 4YO Finals, the Dullard Cup and a heat of the Inter Dominion among her 14 successes. At the stud she left two winners and was the ancestress of the freakish trotting mare Keayang Zahara ($1.5 million), Maori Time (1:51.5), the triple Vicbred winner Spidergirl, the Breeders Crown winners Kyvalley Kyrie and Illawong Armstrong, Im Bobby ($315,215), Master Maori and Kinvara Sue, all Group 1 winners.
Maori’s Glory was Red Coach Glory mare from Maori Mia, by Kentucky from the dual-gaited mare Maori Miss, the three-time Broodmare of the Year and who founded the leading family of trotters in Australasia today.
A champion trotter in Maori’s Idol belongs to this family. At one stage Maori’s Idol almost rewrote the record book, holding three national records. He had a mile mark of 1:59.3, and in all won 40 of his 46 starts including a record 24 in succession.
The Victoria Derby and Australasian Trotting Championship winner Maori Monarch, the metropolitan winning square-gaiters Maori’s Gift, Maori’s Pride and Maori Mara and the Group 2 winning pacer Maori’s Wonder were other members of Maori Miss’s brood.
