Cardigan Sniper adds to his winning record in Youthful Stakes

By Harnesslink ·

Top colt Cardigan Sniper (Ultimate Sniper) added yet another classic to his record with a stirring win In the Benstud Standardbreds Youthful Stakes for colts and geldings at Melton on Saturday night.

CARDIGAN SNIPER
Cardigan Sniper

Just two months ago Cardigan Sniper had won the $100,000 APG Final at Melton and this was his first run back since then.

The only runner drawn on the second row, Cardigan Sniper tussled out favouritism with stable mate Some High.

Some High showed scintillating early speed to race to a clear lead. Driver Mark Pitt was able to manoeuvre Cardigan Sniper from his draw to obtain a one out and one back trail. But no sooner was he in that position that Pitt decided to take off and challenge for the lead. It took him some time to get past Some High and at that stage punters may well have been concerned that he may have done more work than necessary.

CARDIGAN SNIPER 15 AUG REPLAY

Baystyle made a run three wide at the bell although Cardigan Sniper still appeared to be travelling better than his rivals even with Some High parked right behind him ready for one last crack to the leader.

There looked to be some anxious moments in the home straight but once straightened up Cardigan Sniper rose to the occasion and he was comfortably holding off Some High and Lake Como at the finish and rate 1.56.1 in the process.

Pitt explained after the event.

He’s a little bit of a difficult guy he’s very lazy, and he was a little bit funny in the mouth tonight. But anyhow he held them off strong.

I sort of worry a bit  with this guy because he’s a lazy big guy and it takes a bit to drive him. But he was playing around with his mouth for a fraction but once he heard them getting to the inside and outside he really powered away then.
