The 15-dash program saw Ammo ($7.40) capture the $6,250 Preferred Pace in race 14 in 1:52 flat for driver Marc Campbell and trainer Ron Matheson.
Rocks Shining Star (Driven by Brady Sweet) was first to the lead in the featured pace and fronted the field through splits of 27.3 and 55.3 before Ammo, who settled third early, came calling first-over for Campbell and take control of the front past three-quarters of 1:23.4. The six-year-old son of Sweet Lou then held off a furious late charge from defending Gold Cup and Saucer champion Miki Shan N (Corey MacPherson) by a head at the wire. Governor’s Plate champion Get Wings (Paul Langille) was another half-length back in third. Ammo is owned by Patrick Morris of Charlottetown and Woodmere Farms of Marshfield.
Matheson doubled on the program as All Day Press ($2.80) had a maiden victory in line to Gilles Barrieau in 1:58.2 in race 2.
Malevolent ($5.40) was a front-end winner in the $8,500 second leg of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series Gold division in race 11. Trainer-driver Paul Langille sent the four-year-old Malicious gelding to the lead and never looked back, stopping the clock in 1:52.3. Brookdale Johnny (Ken Murphy) closed sharply for second with Phil My Beer (Campbell) third. Malevolent is owned by Debbie Francis of Sweets Corner and Rosanne Langille of Lower Onslow, N.S.
Adam Merner celebrated his birthday with a driving triple on the program beginning with Steamboat Springs ($2.30), who dominated race 5 in 1:53.2 for Merner’s own stable. Merner returned to the winner’s circle with Unforgiven ($30.20) in race 7 for trainer Carson Wilkie before guiding Shanghai Whiskey ($4.20) to victory in race 10 for trainer Wade Myers to give the Shanghai Phil three-year-old six-straight victories.
