Williamson family hold the keys to Southern Surge

By Ken Weingartner ·

On Sunday, the Williamson family will be starting close to thirty percent of the horses  on the card at Southern Surge Finals Day at Winton.

Phil (8), Matty (7), Brad (7) and Nathan (5) look set to play a big game across the ten races.

Here’s what they had to say about their top two chances for Sunday’s feature meeting.

Phil Williamson:

Race Four: Redback Bob (Majestic Son) – driver Nathan Williamson (FR6).

“He wouldn’t have to be any better than his last start, but he wouldn’t need to either. He went 2-43 (2200 metres mobile). That’s class and he’d have to be hard to beat,” Phil said.

Race Nine: Have A Little Faith (Majestic Son) – driver Nathan Williamson (FR7).

“She’s worked up nicely, but I’m happy with a few of them, including Harriot’s Moment (R9) and Becky’s Girl (R9) from the outside of the gate. It’s a very open race.’”

Matty Williamson:

Race Two: Carbonate (Bettor’s Delight) – driver Matty Williamson (FR5).

“They ran a fast last half the other day and she didn’t lose any ground. With that run and a bit of a freshen up she should be pretty ready to go,” Matty said.

Race Seven: New Mexico (Creatine) – driver Craig Ferguson (FR6).

“She had a hard run last start but she loves the mobile mile and has got a handy draw, so she’ll get her chance from there.”

Brad Williamson:

Race Nine: Penelope Lane (Volstead) – driver Max Hill (SR2)

“She’s improved from last time but we’re at a massive disadvantage. The way the Series has been run we not only get a bad draw but an inexperienced driver. It’s put a damper on the Series for me and hindered our chances. She is my best chance but she’s going to have to be very good to beat Becky’s Girl who’s drawn on the front row,” Brad said.

Race Nine: To The Moon And Back (One Over Da Moon) – driver Kerryn Tomlinson (FR4)

“He’s probably my second best chance but as I say, Becky’s Girl will be very hard to beat.”

Nathan Williamson:

Race Five: Rakmacknra (Captaintreacherous) – driver Max Hill (FR2)

“There’s not a lot between my two, but Rakmacknra really stepped up at his first start. We’re happy with how he seems and he’s drawn nice. He’s a good staying horse. I’d say Max could let them work themselves out early, then put a bit of pressure into the race. I think he’s the one to beat,” Nathan said.

Race Eight: Indulge Me (Downbytheseaside) – driver Nathan Williamson (SR2)

“She’s not drawn the best, but she’s class. She can let them work themselves out then be put right into the race. She’s not a certainty, but she’s good enough to win that race with a little bit of luck.”
