Vintage Cheddar wins Bluff Cup

By Harnesslink ·

"He'll be a real nice horse in six months," trainer Alister Black said after Vintage Cheddar won the South Port Bluff Cup at Ascot Park this afternoon.

Black trains the Betterthancheddar gelding for Lindsay and Ian Thomson who own the nucleus of Black's Branxholme racing team.

Driver Brad Williamson took Vintage Cheddar straight to the lead from the inside draw and stayed there for the entire journey beating Jabali by a length and a half. The time was a respectable 2-43.8 in cool conditions.

He's out of the unraced Grinfromeartoear mare Howfarnow which is out of the ten win mare Whanau whose dam Lento won fifteen races, so there's plenty of good pedigree there.

"He's the best homebred one they've bred I think. He was very immature as a young horse and has just taken that wee bit of time. I think he'll go a fair way in time. I think he'll be a real nice Country Cups horse next year."

Black says the three year old will have two months off and come back in time for the better staked races at Christmas time.

The win caps off an excellent run of success for the Thomson's and Black with three year old pacers this season. Their other winners have been Kilowatt Kid and Lawrence.

"There wouldn't be much between him and Kilowatt Kid. In time he could end up being better because he's got that yard of toughness."
