Tasmanian harness racing has lost one of its true greats with the passing of Hall of Fame reinsman Graeme Peck at the age of 94.

Peck was among the state’s most accomplished drivers, recording 483 winners between 1951 and 1978 during a distinguished career that spanned nearly three decades.

His outstanding achievements included five Tasmanian Drivers’ Premierships, claiming the title in 1955/56, 1966/67, 1968/69 and 1969/70, before sharing the premiership in 1970/71 following a dead heat.

Among his many feature race successes were victories in the Tasmanian Pacing Championship with Barita in 1970 and Speedy Ben in 1973. He also enjoyed success in some of the state’s most prestigious events, including the Easter Plate, Danbury Park Cup, Show Cup and Metropolitan Cup.

One of the highlights of his career came in Perth in 1974 when he guided Speedy Ben to victory in the Inter Dominion Consolation, adding a national achievement to his impressive résumé.

In recognition of his contribution to the sport, Peck was inducted into the Tasmanian Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2014.

Widely respected by his fellow horsemen, Graeme was regarded as one of the finest drivers Tasmania produced during his era. His dedication, skill and sportsmanship helped shape the state’s harness racing industry, and his legacy will endure for generations to come.

A funeral service to celebrate Graeme’s life will be held at the Bridgenorth Football Club on Friday, 12 June, commencing at 2:00pm.
