The Insider – New Zealand Analysis April 09 Edition

By Harness Analyst ·

This week’s feature at Cambridge centres around the slot race concept, a format that continues to gain momentum and delivers a genuine clash of elite open-class pacers and trotters. With a strong mix of proven champions and emerging contenders, this year’s editions shape as one of the most competitive yet.

Recent editions have largely gone to the very top tier runners, and once again the big guns dominate the market. However, with several runners bringing different racing patterns and form profiles into play, tempo and positioning will be crucial in deciding the outcome.

With that in mind, this year’s races look set up for a high pressure contests where versatility and race toughness will be key.

Race 8 – TAB TROT $530,000 Mobile 2200m

Keayang Zahara (2)
The standout talent of the field. She brings an exceptional record and continues to build with every run, showing both speed and strength. From a favourable draw she maps to take full control of the race, and if she finds the front without pressure, she will take a power of beating.

Jilliby Ballerini (4)
Ultra consistent and always around the mark in strong company. She has the gate speed to position up early and looks the most logical runner to track the favourite throughout. If the pressure goes on at any stage, she’s the one poised to take advantage

Gus (8)
A high-quality trotter with a sharp turn of foot. His recent performances have shown he can match it with top opposition, and while the draw makes things slightly more challenging, he has the class to work into the race and finish strongly.

Oscar Bonavena (6)
The seasoned campaigner of the field who continues to race well against elite opposition. His toughness and ability to sustain a long run make him a genuine contender, particularly if the tempo lifts mid-race and brings endurance into play. Manners early will be key to his chances.

Selections:

Keayang Zahara (2)
Jilliby Ballerini (4)
Gus (8)
Oscar Bonavena (6)

Race 9 – The Race by Sport Nation $1million Mobile 2200m

Leap To Fame (7)
The benchmark. His record speaks for itself and he continues to perform at an elite level regardless of circumstance. What stands out is his ability to absorb pressure and still produce when it matters most. While he doesn’t always get favours in the run, his sustained speed and class make him the one they all have to beat. A massive run to win this race last year in record time.

Swayzee (2)
A hardened performer who thrives in these high-pressure races. He maps to be prominent throughout and is at his best when rolling forward and controlling the tempo. His recent form stacks up strongly against this field and if he gets the right trip near the speed, he will take plenty of running down.

The Janitor (10)
Still on the upward curve and continues to improve with each preparation. His latest performances suggest he’s closing the gap on the top tier and he brings a strong finishing profile into this. Likely to be doing his best work late, especially if the race is run at a genuine tempo.

Kingman (8)
A high-quality performer who has already shown he can match it with the best on his day. At his peak he has the ability to produce a decisive turn of foot, and if things fall into place during the running, he is more than capable of featuring in the finish. Tricky draw may hinder his chances

Swayzee (2)
The Janitor (10)
