Bangor, Maine …. On a day filled with highlights from the Benson Merrill roster, the accomplishments of a workaday trotter earned the harness racing headlines from the Wednesday (October 16) card at Bangor Raceway, as Merrill’s venerable J S Peyton (Swan For All) hit pay dirt for the 55th time in his career.

Taking full advantage of a rare inside starting spot, the 11-year-old son of Swan For All powered to the lead at the behest of driver Joey Mosher, toyed with the competition while sailing through equal fractions, and then capped his milestone while extending out to a four-length margin at the wire.

J S PEYTON REPLAY

Owned by Mrs Katie Jeanne Trunk, J S Peyton cruised the course timed in a seasonal best 2:00.3 while providing the hat trick coda for the Merrill outfit.

Merrill’s other winners included a pair piloted by Kevin Switzer, Jr; Century Liberty (1:57.1, $2.80), who won for the sixth time this season, and most impressively, Massive Speed (1:54.3, $3.20), who took top honors in the $8000 second leg of the Fred Nichols Pacing Series while securing his fourth consecutive top-class win for owner Leighton Properties.

In other Bangor news, Trainer Autym Sowers happily celebrated her 31st birthday at the track on Wednesday by sending three winners from her well-heeled stable down Victory Lane. The Sowers stampede, all corralled by driver McGwire Sowers, included scores from Skyway Freakshow (1:56.3, $4.40), who claimed her 14th win of the season (currently tied for 4th most in North America); Parklane Terror (1:56.3, $4.60), who cruised through a devastatingly effective :57  back-half after lulling the field through a :59.3 opening circuit; and At Any Cost (1:55.2, $3.80), who continued his rise through the claiming classes while securing his third consecutive victory.

Bangor Raceway now embarks on a one-month hiatus but will swing back into action beginning on Wednesday (October 14) with post time slated for 2:30 pm (EDT). Bangor will then play host to the $400,000 (Plus) Maine Sire Stakes Sophomore Championships on Saturday (October 17), a card which will also include the $20,000 final,of the Nichols Series, with post time slated for 3:00 pm.

Racing will then continue at Bangor on a three day per week schedule through the first week in November.
