Stonewall love their homebreds

By Oak Grove Racing ·

Although Stonewall are big buyers at the yearling sales they are particularly happy when one of their homebreds wins.

Crimson Tide (Downbytheseaside) kept the homebred flag flying with his win at Motukarara last Sunday.

“Jill (Stockman) likes her homebreds. They put a lot of effort into the breeding side of it. We have twenty one of our own in the stable this year and up to twenty five or thirty next year. They like to do the breeding side of it but they also like to buy from the sales because you get different bloodlines,” said Amanda Telfer who trains in partnership with her brother Steve.

The Stonewall broodmare band has expanded recently with the retirement from racing of Seaside Rose, the winner of eight and Akatea, who won seven.

“They’ve both gone out to Dancingonmoonlight where they keep all the mares.”

Crimson Tide has now won three of his five starts and has been a bit of a surprise package.

“In his work he didn’t give us that impression. I think he’s just been in the right races. He’s a brother to Caught The Eye and she’s an honest wee customer too. So I think he’s following along her lines. He’s getting up in the grades but he’s handling the stands really well and putting himself in the race, so that’s helped him as well.”

The three year old is out of Bettor’s Delight mare Spicy Delight whose dam Spicey was bred by Mark and Debbie Smith of Shard Farm.

Spicey won nine of her thirty one starts including the 2007 Listed PPG Wrightson NZ Yearling Sales Series Fillies Pace at Addington. She was part owned by Stonewall Stud and was Steve Stockman’s first black type winner.
