South Australian racing returns to Wayville

Harness racing driver Wayne Jacques heads to Wayville tonight knowing he’ll no longer hold a record that has stood for the past 44 years.

Jacques is the last man to drive a winner at the showgrounds circuit when Dulaw led throughout at the final meeting held at the inner city circuit on April 7, 1973.

Harness Racing returns to it’s historical home tonight with eight races programmed and some of the sport’s best from both SA and interstate set to compete on the track.

Former local stars Geoff Webster, Lance and John Justice, Greg Sugars and Kate Gath return home to compete alongside top locals Ryan Hyrhorec, Wayne and Dani Hill, Anthony Robinson, Josh Holberton, Scott Ewen and Ken Rogers.

A crowd of more than 45,000 packed into Wayville to witness Cardigan Bay win the 1963 Inter Dominion and Harness Racing SA is hoping for the biggest crowd Adelaide trotting has seen since Our Sir Vancelot claimed Inter Dominion glory at Globe Derby Park in 1997.

“We’ve sold more the 6000 tickets and we’re expecting a similar amount to grab tickets at the gate,’’ HRSA Chief Executive John Lewis said.

“We’ve made sure there will plenty of tickets available for people on the day.

“I've been out there all day today and it has taken shape, it really looks like a racing venue now.

“It’s shaping a nice day and we’re expecting a bumper crowd.’’ Lewis said.

Wayne Jacques is the son of Bob Jacques who was one of Wayville’s top drivers and was part of a sensational fall which took place at the winning post.

“Dad was on the horse behind the leader which went down and he was catapulted high in the air, eventually landing on his feet, and running,’’ Wayne Jacques said.

“Atkins Photography took the photo and it won an Australian award.

“Wayville will always have a special place in the history of South Australian trotting. It won’t be quite the same but I’m sure everyone will love the atmosphere created by a big crowd around the small track.”
