Soho Lanikai to stand at Medowie Lodge

By Jordan Gerrans ·

The Somebeachsomewhere horse Soho Lanikai, who originally stood stud in Victoria, is to stand this season at Medowie Lodge, Newcastle, of one of NSW’s leading studmasters Darren Reay.

Soho Lanikai

The brilliant, young stallion – he was foaled in 2017 – is proving a great success with his first small crops racing.

In his first season he left 13 foals, and of these he had seven to the races, and six have been winners. Of 22 foals three-years-old and older, Soho Lanikai has had 10 starters for seven winners and two placegetters at an average of $38,620 per starter!

From his first crop he sired a smart colt in Captain Moore, who won four races in Australia including a heat of the Vicbred Super Series 2YO and one at Menangle before being sold to North America where he has increased his stake tally to almost $300,000 and taken a record of 1:50.6.

Enola, a winner at Menangle and Albion Park, the Tasmanian Country Championship victor Glenview Lanikai, Atomic Black, the winner of three of his four starts this season, Mad Punta (three wins) and the Globe Derby Park winner Soho Empire State have been other winners by Soho Lanikai from his first crops.

Soho Lanikai was a top juvenile pacer himself, winning the Victoria Premiere Stakes at his only start at Melton by an incredible 65 metres at a 1:54 rate – the second fastest time recorded by a juvenile at the Melbourne headquarters’ track when set.

On the score of blood, Soho Lanikai ticks all the boxes.

He is a member of the dominant Direct Scooter sireline, that which produced Somebeachsomewhere, Captaintreacherous, Mach Three, Downbytheseaside, Stay Hungry and Cattlewash, all champion sires.

Obahma Joy, the dam of Soho Lanikai, is a member of one of Australia’s fastest moving families.

A Group 1 winner herself, Obahma Joy, the dam of seven winners from eight foals, belongs to the immediate family of the Group 1 winners Make Mine Cullen, Supersonic Miss, Goodtime Heaven and College Chapel.

Soho Lanikai boasts three strong crosses of the blood of Abercrombie and two of Direct Scooter and Cam Fella. He should prove an ideal outcross to mares boasting Bettor’s Delight, Art Major and Western Hanover blood.

Soho Lanikai’s service fee is $2,000 including GST with discounts for multiple mares. His progeny will be eligible for the NSW Breeders Challenge Blue Series.
