She’s Spicy breaks 12-year-old track record

She’s Spicy breaks 12-year-old track record

By Mike Sweeney ·

Windsor, Maine … She’s Spicy added a touch of flavor to the second session of harness racing of the 2026 meeting at the Windsor Fair on Sunday (August 30), speeding round the lightning quick oval to establish a new divisional track record at the 138-year-old mid-Maine agricultural exhibition.

At the behest of driver Ron Cushing, She’s Spicy overcame the distinct disadvantage of scoring from post seven on the track where the eight-horse trails, leaving alertly alongside Brutalizer (Andy Harrington) as the field navigated the first turn. Gaining the lead just past the quarter-pole, She’s Spicy extended out to a comfortable lead, striking reasonable and even fractions (:29.4/:58.4/1:28.4) en route to establishing the new standard for aged distaff trotters in 1:58.2.

The effort supplanted the longtime held benchmark of 1:58.3, set by Loveswept and driver Drew Campbell in 2014.

“The way this track is built, it’s hard to come from behind” Cushing remarked, “So I left with her, thankfully Andy let me go, and we kept rolling. I got to drive her at Monticello a couple of weeks back and got parked with her but she’s got a little gate speed and this week I got out out front a little more than I had planned, but that’s a good mile – a good mile.

A five-year-old daughter of Uncle Peter, She’s Spicy is trained by Tammy Sowers for Morrison Racing Stables.

Paying $5.60 to win, the effort marked her sixth victory of the season.

Cushing continued to hold the hot hand throughout the mid-to-late portion of Sunday’s card, sandwiching a pair of wins around his track record performance, first charging gate-to-wire with Seriously Feared (1:56.4, $6.40), putting a seasonal mark on the six-year-old Fear The Dragon gelding for trainer Norman Black and owner Sherman Clary, Jr.

“He raced really good for me in Skowhegan so I was kind of excited for him today” Cushing explained, “He had the outside but he handled it well. He came from off the pace last week so he’s kind of a versatile horse but he’s strong and sometimes he tries harder than he’s supposed to. Today he did it the right way.”

Cushing concluded his hat trick with a win from an entry from his wife, Heidi’s roster, when Mansome (1:55.1, $5.40) sprinted down the highway to secure his third win of the season for owner Bruce Weinstein.

“He’s a comeback horse all the time” Cushing explained, “He had a career-ending type of injury in the field in January but the owner loves him so we had another surgery, gave him the time off, and here we are. He’s a tough old horse but he’s still young at heart though.”

Harness racing resumes at the Windsor Fair on Monday (August 31) with post time scheduled for 2:00 pm (EDT). The ten-race betting card will be preceded by a non-wagering Maine Sire Stakes event scheduled for 1:30 pm.

As is the norm, harness racing will be the featured afternoon attraction at Windsor throughout the 10-day late-summer agricultural exhibition. Saturday and Sunday post times are set for 1:00 pm (EDT), weekday posts (with the exception of the dark Wednesday on September 2) slated for 2:00 pm, while the traditional Labor Day program provides the grand finale beginning at 1:00 pm.
