Sheetweb Weaver continues Michael Stanley’s run of success

The much improved trotter Sheetweb Weaver (Yankee Spider) gave a faultless harness racing display when he led for most of the way in the Stan Dumesny Trotters Discretionary at Menangle on Saturday evening.

Starting off the 10 metre strand, Sheetweb Weaver was quickly into stride and headed off early leader Macho Man. Driver Michael Stanley allowed Sheetweb Weaver to stride along at least a length clear of his rivals. Favourite Speedy Lover was well back in the field but after a lap his driver Chris Geary allowed his horse to stride up alongside the leader. Sunny Gee was then able to follow with a trail.

Speedy Lover issued a serious challenge and at the top of the home straight he looked as if he would outstay his opponents. However Sheetweb Weaver continued to show plenty of determination and he gradually drew away to win by three metres from Speedy Lover with Courage Stride finishing on fairly for third without troubling the winner.

Sheetweb Weaver has been in a number of stables and only recently joined Michael Stanley’s team at Menangle. The stable is in a purple patch of winning races including a double at Melton on Friday in the VicBred series with Sao Paolo Simba and Soho Americano but this is Stanley’s only known trotter in his team.

He is out of Bold Invasion and has been the only winning progeny of the mare. Bold Invasion is out of Bold Dee Jay a capable trotter winning eight races including the Bathurst Coronet.

The race is named in honour of the late Stan Dumesny who operated the famous Ruby Vale stud at Parkes in central west New South Wales.

Stan made a valuable contribution to harness racing as a a studmaster, breeder, owner, trainer, driver and administrator as well as being a major identity of the Parkes community.
