Sales debut for Sir Lincoln is eagerly awaited
The harness racing yearling sales next week may not match their thoroughbred counterparts in the money department but it is still the highlight for the year for the breeding industry in New Zealand and creates a lot of interest on both sides of the Tasman in harness racing circles.
All the hype and advertising gets put on hold as the buyers vote with their wallets as to what stock demand a premium and what stock don't.
First year stallions always create a fair bit of interest as trainers and owners can view the progeny for the first time in the hustle and bustle of a yearling sale.
One stallion this year that has created a fair bit of interest leading into next weeks sales is Sir Lincoln 1:54 ($650,,230)
The son of Mach Three is a great looking individual himself and he is passing those good looks on to his stock if his progeny in the sales are anything to go by.
Bred on the same cross as the leading sire in North America in Somebeachsomewhere 1:46.8 ($3,221,299), Sir Lincoln won 20 races in a brilliant racing career.
The important thing to note here is that Mach Three is a proven sire of sires with his son Somebeachsomewhere on top of the world and for Sir Lincoln to be bred on exactly the same cross is a big plus for the young stallion.
Sir Lincoln was very well received by New Zealand breeders in year one at stud and as a result he has 86 yearlings on the ground.
The quality of the mares he served is there as well when you have a look at the maternal families of the Sir Lincoln yearlings being offered at next week's sales.
We thought we would highlight a few of the ones that really took our eye.
Lot 125 – Linc's Tiger
The first foal from a Real Desire daughter of the brilliant racemare Tigerish 1:56.5 ($491,957), Linc's Tiger has a great pedigree page just full of brilliant age group performers.
Tigerish left seven winners including such standouts as Justa Tiger 1:57.1 ($155,449) and Tiger Turner ($79,070) (2 year old filly of the year) who at stud has left the 1:49.2 performer All Tiger ($496,107) and Tiger Tina 1:53.8 ($104,877)
Linc's Tiger himself is a stunning looking yearling as you can see from the photo and a great advertisement for his young sire.
Lot 342 – Linc's Bute
The second foal from a full sister to the dual derby winner in Badlands Bute 1:56.6 ($338,365), Linc's Bute also has a pedigree page as good as it gets.
The second dam Te Phyno has produced eight winners and she takes up a whole pedigree page on her own.
Not only did Te Phyno leave a dual derby winner in Badlands Bute but she also produced a New Zealand Oaks winner in Caps Off 1:52 ($173,579) who is already the dam of six winners including such smart types as Captian Cullen 1:54.9 ($117,798) and Miss Madoff 1:56.9 ($118,308)
Linc's Bute himself looks all class in the photos and the type that will get up and go early.
Lot 461 – Liberal Arden
The third foal from the Artsplace mare Ardenart who first two foals have both been winners in Rockahula Arden 1:58.5 and Designer Arden 2:1.1
Ardenart is a half sister to eight winners including such standouts as Fantastic Dream 1:53.2 ($233,879), Arden Banner 1:58.4 ($114,572), Arden's Heritage 1:52.2 ($100,449) and Arden's Tetrick 1:57.3 ($72,456) while a daughter in Achieve A Dream 2:1.5 has produced the former two year old filly of the year in Arden's Darlin 1:57.2 ($245,829)
Great pedigree and Liberal Arden is just as impressive in the flesh as you can see from the photos.
It is never easy in 2016 for colonial bred stallions like Sir Lincoln to make it in todays highly competitive stallion market but he has been given a great chance by New Zealand breeders with the quality of the mares he has covered and the resultant yearlings have certainly impressed a lot of the buyers who have been inspecting the yearlings in the last few weeks.
His reception at next weeks sale will be watched with a lot of interest by New Zealand breeders.
