Rover gets the run

By Nicholas Oakes ·

Ramblin Rover (Net Ten EOM) got the perfect run at Gore today and in the home straight came up the inside to win the GWD/Tyreland Mobile Pace.

“Craig ended up dropping to three fence and it worked out perfectly really. He did get held up a bit turning for home and I thought he may have rallied for third, but he just kept on coming,” trainer and part owner Chelsea Faithful said.

At the line, Ramblin Rover had a head on Honeycomb who finished on well in the middle of the track and Hazer was a head back in third.

Ramblin Rover initially raced out of the Brett Gray stable where he won one race and had a handful of placings. He then was placed with Brent McIntyre, then with Matty Williamson, before Faithful picked him up on the Gavelhouse Horse Auction site for $2,000.

“I was just looking for a quiet horse for Ben (partner Ben McMaster) to drive on. Everyone said he was perfect to drive.”

The five year old gelding is owned by Faithful, her mother Louise Cox, Louise’s father Norm, Tracey McMaster and her son Ben.

“It was perfect to pick up a penalty free race and to win today was good. He just hasn’t been getting much luck. I thought he went really good at Invercargill two starts ago. It’s not too much of a surprise today.”

Ramblin Rover has now won two races for Faithful and banked over $14,000 for his new trainer.

“Karen Burrow has done a lot of body work on Rover too.”

Faithful’s star filly Ideal Crown, (American Ideal) is back in work and is a month away from going to the workouts.

“We’ll just look at trying to find a suitable starting point like a one to two win fillies and mares race. Her ultimate goal is the New Zealand Oaks. I’m humming and harring about Cup week. Personally I’d like to miss it and aim at the Oaks.”

Today’s meeting was buffered by strong winds and rain and later in the day thunder and lightning delayed the starts to some races.

At the Winton Workouts on Friday a handful of Southland’s better standardbreds strutted their stuff.

The main pacing heat was won by the Brett Gray trained and driven Haley Jaccka (Always B Miki) who beat Chicago Sky by half a head, with Secret Agent Man a length and a quarter back in third.

Nine win mare Haley Jaccka carries a nomination for the NZ Trotting Cup.

Duchess Maria (Father Patrick) showed her class in the fastest trot on Friday afternoon when she easily beat Fiery Bandito by three quarters of a length.

The unbeaten Nathan Williamson trained Duchess Maria will have one race day start in the south prior to her first main target this season, the Macca Lodge Sires’ Stakes Three Year Old Fillies Classique at Addington on 18th September. Fiery Bandito holds a nomination for the Renwick Farms Dominion on Cup Day.

The Jeremy Douglas trained Always B Batman (Always B Miki) won his 2400 metre stand by four lengths from Utah Jazz while Work It Out (Downbytheseaside) trained by Kirk Larsen impressively won his Learners heat by half a head from Lexi.
