A winning double at Pinjarra with the two-year-old Russian Sniper and Southerner in early February has given tyro breeders and Australian Pacing Gold vendors Westbred Pacing a timely boost.

“We bred both of them and put them both through the sale,” Kellie Simmonds, the joint owner of Westbred Pacing with sister-in-law Chelsea Barr, said.

Both were sired by the young Captaintreacherous horse Captain Ahab, who was imported from North America by the Simmonds family in 2021 as their foundation stallion.

A Stay Hungry half-sister to Russian Sniper is part of the seven-strong consignment being offered by Westbred Pacing at the Australian Pacing Gold Perth Yearling Sale at Magic Millions on Sunday, March 1. She is Lot 360.

“She’s the spitting image of Russian Sniper,” preparer Luke Edwards said. “She’s a solidly built filly with a great temperament that should go early.”

Her dam, the 1:53 Presidential Ball mare Russian Ball, has a 100 percent record at stud with eight foals for eight winners – seven in 2:00 and two $100,000 earners. Lot 330, one of two Captain Ahab fillies in the sale, is the first foal out of The Hope Diamond, a successful half-sister to The Pearl and Westbred Classic winner Menemsha and the Village Kid Sprint winner Bettor’s Gem.

She’s a close relative of The Pearl and APG Gold Bullion winner Swingband, Atlantic Gem (WA Dainty’s Daughter) and the Victoria Derby hero Rare Gem.

“Hez The Boss, a two-year-old half-brother to The Hope Diamond, went 28 and 26.6 for his last two quarters at his first start, so there’s lot of speed in the family,” Edwards stated. Another colt from the Westbred Pacing draft that should command plenty of attention is Lot 329, a flashy type by the champion sire American Ideal from the Bettor’s Delight mare Toni Street NZ.

A Gloucester Park winner, Toni Street ranks as a half-sister to the pacing standout and dual NZ Cup winner Copy That ($2 million), who stood his first season at stud in WA last year.

“He’s a nice natured colt who’s very willing to learn,” Edwards said. The other Captain Ahab filly is Lot 361, a half-sister to the dual SA Southern Cross placegetter Art Jester and a member of the same family as the dual Inter Dominion heat winner Galactic Star. Completing the Westbred Pacing offering are Lot 379, a Stay Hungry colt from the multiple Group winner Sarah Goody, Lot 414, an American Ideal filly from Our Jereme’s Gem NZ, and Lot 422, a filly by the US Breeders Crown champion Dancin Lou out of the Art Major mare All About Riley.
