Noodlum - a sire for both gaits

Noodlum will be best remembered for winning fifteen races in a row between April and November 1974.

Once his racing career ended, he also had success at stud and left good pacers, including NZ Cup winner Master Mood, New Zealand Derby winner Race Ruler and Laser Lad, who won the Great Northern Derby, the New Zealand Free for All and two Invercargill Cups.

But few will remember that he also left two very good trotters in Tyron Scottie and Lenin.

Tyron Scottie won twenty one races for Patrick O’Reilly including two National Trots.

He was raced by Alan and Ian Neumann and was their first winner when he was victorious at Ashburton in September 1986.

Lenin qualified and had two starts for Robert Dunn, winning on debut at Ashburton in October 1998. He then had two starts for Ray Mathews before he headed to Australia where he was trained by John Justice.

He carved out a stellar career there, winning a further forty races. His biggest win came in the 1995 V.L. Dullard Trotters Cup when he beat the likes of Pride Of Petite, Chiola Cola, Diamond Field and Knight Pistol.

Interesting Lenin and Laser Lad were full-brothers and were bred by Robert Cameron.

Another good trotting winner by Noodlum was In The Pink. She was out of Picotee, making her a half sister to Framalda – 22 wins including the National Trot.

At stud In The Pink left Enthuse, the dam of Inspire (9), Sundowner Bay (18) and Pink Whiz (5).

It’s not a complete surprise that Noodlum left a few squaregaiters. He was a son of Batchelor Hanover who not only left good pacers Arapaho and Noodlum, but also left a handful of trotters including Bachelor Tom and Pointer Hanover both of whom won fourteen races.

At stud, Pointer Hanover left Frances Jay Bee foundation mare for the ‘Kenny’ family that included One Kenny (19), One Under Kenny (11) and One Over Kenny (32).
