Mighty Logan storms home in Ordeal Trotting Cup

Mighty Logan (Creatine) made an immediate impact on his return to harness racing with a powerful finishing burst to capture the $37,900 Group 3 ITM Ordeal Trotting Cup at Addington on Friday night.

The 2600m handicap feature developed into a race of constantly changing positions, with several runners taking their turn at the head of proceedings.

Mighty Logan was one of them, but driver John Dunn eventually found himself three back on the markers as the complexion of the race continued to change.

Turning for home, Habibti Pat was beginning to feel the pressure in front and the field started to fan out as the gaps appeared.

For a moment it looked as though Mr Love had timed his challenge perfectly, but Dunn was able to work Mighty Logan away from the inside and into clear running.

Once balanced on the outside, Mighty Logan let down with a powerful finishing burst, sweeping past Mr Love in the final strides to score by a nose.

MIGHTY LOGAN REPLAY

It was an impressive performance from the Robert and Jenna Dunn-trained trotter, particularly given it was his first start back from a spell.

Dunn had been confident heading into the race despite Mighty Logan having only a quiet trial to prepare for his return.

“He had a few problems in Auckland, but that was a great return. He only had one very quiet trial, but the beauty of the beach is he’s copped a fair bit of work, so he was ready for tonight.”

Dunn admitted things hadn’t gone entirely to plan during the race, but Mighty Logan showed his class when finally presented with clear air.

“He let down great. In hindsight, I probably should have sat instead of having a crack at the lead, but this guy, when he’s right, he is pretty good.”

The narrow victory over Mr Love was an encouraging start to what Dunn hopes will be a major spring campaign.

“It was a good first-up run and hopefully he improves on it.”

Mighty Logan’s victory also guarantees him a start in the 2026 Renwick Farms Dominion Trot, providing he remains eligible for selection.
