Matty gearing up to roll out the big guns
Oamaru horseman Matty Williamson is looking forward to racing some of his better stock over the spring, with Aaliyah, Master McGoogan, Seeking Clarity and Axel Rose all close to resuming.
Two year old filly Aaliyah (Sweet Lou) showed plenty of promise in her last campaign.
She ran second on debut to Validation in the G3 Caduceus Club of Southland/Alabar Fillies Classic at Ascot Park and was a solid fourth in the G3 Southern Two Year Old Fillies Classic at Winton.
“She’ll have one more trial in about ten days time, then we’ll look at a maiden or two year old race for her. We’ll see how she progresses and whether she’s up to the age group stuff. She grew at the wrong time last time in and weakened up a bit. She looks like a stronger horse now, so I’m hoping her body will carry her this time in,” Matty said.
Two year old trotter Master McGoogan (What The Hill) showed plenty of class in his first campaign, culminating in an impressive win in the G3 New Zealand Two Year Old Trotting Stakes at Addington in May.

“He’s racing on the 11th in a two year old trot at Addington, then he’ll race in The Sundon on the 25th. He’s holding his condition a lot better and is a stronger horse after the wee break he had.”
Three year old filly Seeking Clarity (Ultimate Machete) started nine times as an early three year old, winning three races and running second three times. Her last start was in June when she was beaten by a nose by the talented Cherish Me in a Silk Road Final at Addington.

“She’ll trial in the middle of September and her first start will be on the 9th October (Hilarious Guest Classic at Addington). She’s not paid up for Sires Stakes and Nevele R, but she’ll be in everything else she’s eligible for.”
Axel Rose (En Solitaire) has been looked after and it’s starting to pay dividends. The four year old trotter has won four of his ten starts – his last two on the trot.

“He’ll going to the trials on the 8th then he’ll race on Hannon (Memorial) day in a junior drivers race and Hayden (Douglas) will have a spin on him. After that we’ll pick our battles. I’m happy with the way he’s come back and he’ll go through the Cup meeting onto the Harness 5000. Because of his ability he’s gone through the grades quickly. He’s a horse with a future.”
