YONKERS, NY, Friday, May 8, 2015 – They left Krispy Apple and harness racing driver Jason Bartlett alone Friday night and the seven-figure sister made 'em pay, winning Yonkers Raceway's featured $42,000 Filly and Mare Open Handicap Pace.
Assigned outside her six foes, the millionairess worked around Sir Jillian Z Tam (Pat Lachance), then had an anxious moment (:27.3, 57.1, 1:25.1, 1:52.3). Despite the cheapy fractions, "Jillian" lost touch, while 7-5 fave Delightful Dragon (George Brennan) was never able to get close from first-up.
The final margin for Krispy Apple, as the second choice, was 3½ lengths, with 10-1 Cherry Bliss (Mark MacDonald) winning a three-way scrum for second. Delightful Dragon, Sir Jillian Z Tam and Virgin Mary (Jordan Stratton) settled for the remainder.
For Krispy Apple, a 7-year-old daughter of Western Ideal co-owned by Bamond Racing and Joseph Davino and trained by Jeffrey Bamond Jr., it was her second win in seven seasonal starts (career earnings of $1,313,323). The exacta paid $72.50, with the triple returning $307.
Note that since no one took down Friday’s Pick 5, Saturday’s gimmick offers a carryover of $3,165.90 (50-cent base wager, races 7 through 11).
The Raceway's live season continues Saturday night (post time 7:10 PM). After that, it's Monday (7:10 PM), a Tuesday (1 PM, second round of the Jackpot Next Door Claiming Series), then Thursday through Saturday (all at 7:10 PM). Note Sunday matinees are done until November. Evening simulcasting accompanies all night programs, with afternoon simulcasting available daily.
