Jumal wins Northern Derby

Jumal (Downbytheseaside) got back into the winning groove when he dominated from the top to win the $200,000 G1 Woodlands Stud Northern Derby at Alexandra Park tonight.

Trained by Steven Reid, the super talented three year old was made a hot favourite as soon as the draws came out and he lobbed barrier one.

“We had to chance our arm early from the barrier draw. Andretti came out hard and a couple of others. To run that hard that early over 2700, keep ticking along. Then Matty White came round and there was a wee bit more pressure and he kicked away from the Telfer runner (Allamericanplayer) who had enjoyed a lovely trip. Full credit to the horse and pretty special animal,” winning driver Blair Orange said.

JUMAL REPLAY

Jumal had a length and a half to spare on Allamericanplayer with Special Occasion a neck back in third.

The winning time was 3-20.9.

“Down the back the last time, he wanted to get on the job a wee bit. Once he skipped clear round the corner he went to sleep a bit. Horses like this can do a bit more when you need them to.”

The win was Reid’s second in the age group feature. He won with Monkey King in 2005.
