Joe too good on debut

Home / New Zealand / Joe too good on debut

Both trainer Brett Gray and driver Brent Barclay were impressed with debutant Proposition Joe (Always B Miki) after the two year old took out the EH Ball ITM Mobile Pace at Ascot Park today.

Barclay took the gelding straight to the top from gate two and other than shying at the bell lap the youngster handled himself well.

“He’s casual but he’s new to the game. He’s been trialling really well. He’s a cool wee horse,” Gray said after Proposition Joe came away to win by two and a quarter lengths from Rakaturbo.

“Brent’s got a bit of time for this horse which is good. He doesn’t hand out may accolades (laughter). He just loves his cool relaxed attitude. He has no overcheck, wears nothing, (special gear) steers good. He’s just A, B, C.”

The winning time was 2-45.8.

“It was a blustery old day. They ran 2-45 home in 58. It was a good effort for a two year old in his first time at the races. Brent never pulled the plugs. He’s certainly half exciting.”

Gray is unsure where and when the horse will next race.

“I don’t think we’ll race him heaps.”

Gray bought Proposition Joe at the 2024 Yearling Sales for $24,000 and the gelding was made favourite for today’s race after impressively winning his last three workouts.
