Three harness races will be held on the Gympie racecourse on July 25, at the Zinc 96 Race Day. Racing Queensland has agreed to fund these three harness racing events to add to the usual five thoroughbred races on Zinc 96 day.
There will be mobile starts for each of the harness races with harness racing officials having approved the Gympie track for harness events after an inspection earlier this year.
Gympie Turf Club president Spencer Slatter said some additional watering of the track between races would be needed to ensure a firm surface for the harness horses and the mobile starting gate.
Provincial race clubs such as Kilcoy and Beaudesert have staged harness races on their grass tracks but the July 25, dual code race meeting in Gympie will be the first run on a sand track.
