Victorian breeders Bruce Paul and Peter Watkinson are offering an athletic filly by Captain Crunch from Sahara Sunrise, Lot 142, at the Melbourne Australian Pacing Gold Sale on February 15.
Their ‘Sahara’ family commenced back in February 2007 when Bruce and Peter were the successful bidders on a Village Jasper-Macrandra filly at the APG Yearling Sales in Melbourne.
They outlaid just $11,000 to purchase her from well-known vendor Ross Gange. She was later named Sahara Miss and accumulated $66,463 on the racetrack, winning on 13 occasions. Her best win was at Melton on September 2, 2011 when driven by the late and great Greg Sugars.
Sahara Miss has been an absolute gem in the breeding shed, producing eight foals of which seven have won a combined total of $961,325 (to January, 20 2026).
So when adding the $66,463 in prizemoney won to that total, Sahara Miss is a million dollar mare. Now that is a gilt edged investment for just $11,000!
The first foal produced by Sahara Miss is the Art Major female called Sahara Sunrise and it is her fifth foal by Captain Crunch that will be offered as Lot 142 at Oaklands Junction on February 15.
The first three foals from Sahara Sunrise have won 18 races and over $175,000 between them. The fourth foal Sahara Seakret had three starts as a late two-year-old in 2025, resulting in a win and two second placings.
Lot 142 is being prepared for the sale by Abby Sanderson at Murchison in northern Victoria.
“This filly is coming along in leaps and bounds. She is so beautifully mannered and I’m really happy with everything about her,” Abby said.
“We have had a few horses from this family in our stable and Sahara Tiger (a full brother to the dam of Lot 142) is my all-time favourite horse.”
The filly loses nothing from her sire, Captain Crunch, the 2018 USTA 2YO Pacing Colt of the Year.
His oldest progeny in Australia are just commencing their four-year-old careers. He has sired 73 Australian bred winners from his first two crops and seven of his richest 10 progeny to have raced to date are fillies.
There are only 29 pacing fillies catalogued for the Melbourne sale and they are eligible for the $100,000 2YO APG Sales race in 2027.
So find your way to B Barn on Sales weekend to have a good inspection of Lot 142.
