By Tony Milanese ·

Exciting harness racing filly Keayang Zahara (Volstead) proved again her sheer class when she had an effortless win in the $50,000 Aldebaran Park Need for Speed Princess Final.

As expected driver Jason Lee steadied the filly to the lead and with her easy relaxed stride Keayang Zahara was never out of second gear to record her eighth successive in and maintain her unbeaten record.

Running her last quarter in 27.4 Keayang Zahara had 9 metres to spare over a game Maori Mac with Jilliby Ballerini in third.

Keayang Zahara will likely back up for next weeks $75,000 Victoria Trotters Oaks and then she will head to New Zealand for the inaugural running of the Ascent worth $NZ500,000 to be staged at Addington in mid November. She is likely to be Australia’s only runner and will be a worthy competitor.

Driver Jason Lee was unequivoval in his praise of the filly. “It is awesome to be lucky enough to sit behind her. She was good. We didn’t want her to have too hard a run. She’s pretty easy going these days but still got a bit of attitude. It’s a massive team effort with the family and crew who put in all the hard work”.

As expected Derek the Jet (Volstead) toyed with his rivals in the Speed Prince Final and in doing so gave his trainer driver Nathan Jack the perfect birthday present.

Bouncing straight to the front Derek the Jet strolled along and was always clear of his five rivals. Kyvalley Michael tried to make a race of it along the back straight but Derek the Jet powered away to record an effortless win by just under 8 metres from Kyvalley Michael who just edged out Remus Phoenix.

In winning Derek the Jet extended his unbeaten streak to nine. He will be set for the $75,000 Victoria Trotters Derby at Maryborough on 20 October.

Nathan Jack commented after the race. “It was quite an easy win. He wasn’t out there to break records. He was out there to win”.

He certainly powered home to record an impressive final quarter of 27.5.
