Exceptional profits not uncommon
Purchasing Standardbred horses, either privately or at an auction like the up and coming 2020 APG NATIONAL MIXED SALE, at one stage in their lives and then reselling them at another stage for profit is considered a pinhook!
The APG National Mixed Sales has thrown up some truly incredible stories of financial gain for the astute investors following the strategy of buying low and selling high.
As was the case with the $16,000 purchase of Lot 16 from our 2019 National Mixed Sale that went on to sell for $50,000 in our 2020 Sydney Yearling.
Exceptional profits like this are not uncommon, so don’t think they are restricted to NSW pinhookers. Not so long ago another loyal and much loved APG client from Victoria purchased a weanling for $25,000 and serveral months later sold the same horse for $100,000 in the APG Melbourne sale.
While I acknowledge a solid understanding of the value of the weanling is paramount before jumping in and buying up a large number of weanlings in the 2020 APG NATIONAL MIXED SALE, what is clear, is that success stories from the people that have put in effort doing their research, can give enormous encouragement for the smaller consignors looking to build their team of yearlings for the up and coming 2021 APG yearling sales. Please note that all weanlings purchased in 2020 APG National Mixed Sale will have a short window to enter them for the APG 2021 Yearlings Sales.
Although the financial gain is one of their key drivers for pinhooking, another angle is the opportunity for the well-researched followers of breeding patterns to display a canny knack of identifying horses that have a better chance of delivering above normal levels of prosperity on the track.
One quick example would be Border Control who was himself pinhooked and sold through the APG system for $50,000. This son of Bettors Delight who is out of the Artsplace mare Contrapan, has gone on to have a magnificent career for his connections by wining north of $750,000.
What is also abundantly clear is the pleasure you have a chance to witness working these beautiful young weanlings as they grow and develop into something spectacular in such a short amount of time.
Shown is a great example (from last year’s 2019 National Mixed Sale to the 2020 Sydney’s Yearling Sale, just months later) of how these 35 weanlings available in this sale could potentially blossom.
Please note APG is getting daily updates from key horse transporting companies on the most cost effective (and COVID 19 compliant) ways of moving horses interstate.
