Bulletproof Boy prepares for the Nullabor with all the way win

Victoria’s favourite pacer Bulletproof Boy (Art Official) showed he’s ready for his major assignment

Victoria’s favourite pacer Bulletproof Boy (Art Official) showed he’s ready for his major assignment in the $1.25 million Nullabor in a fortnight with a determined all the way win in the Hip Pocket Castlemaine Free For All at Melton on Saturday evening.

But he has driver James Herbertson to thank as he went straight to the lead from the dispatch and was then able to dictate his own terms in front. In just a six horse field his only dangers Fighter Command and Bay of Biscay were second last and last respectively.

BULLETPROOF BOY 4 APRIL REPLAY

Running his first quarter in just 31.6 seconds ensured that the race would be a sprint home and that Fighter Command and Bay Of Biscay would have it all to do.

Justalittlesip moved up alongside the leader to give Fighter Command and Bay Of Biscay some cover but Herbertson let Bulletproof Boy slip away with a 26.7 seconds final quarter. Fighter Command tried to issue a challenge but Bulletproof Boy had enough in reserve to hold him off by a neck with Bay Of Biscay five metres away third.

Fighter Command lost no supporters in his second placing while Bay Of Biscay will improve on that effort and should be better next time he runs.

Bulletproof Boy continues to surprise with his recent efforts and the eleven year old gelding is arguably racing in the best form of his career. He’ll face his biggest test when he contests the Nullabor where he’ll encounter the top Western Australian pair of Minstrel (who’s likely to start favourite) and Magnificent Storm.

But Bulletproof Boy has shown he can hold his own as evidenced by his recent venture in New South Wales.

He thrives on racing and trainer Scott Ewen is also likely to have a crack at the $300,000 Fremantle Cup a week later after the Nullabor. He certainly will be a worthy representative for Victoria.
