Broodmare Lettucereason set to make history
The Art Major broodmare gem Lettucereason is on the verge of etching her name into harness racing immortality.
The deeds of her progeny on the racetracks in Australia and New Zealand this year, notably Leap To Fame and Swayzee, have virtually assured her winning Harness Racing Australia’s Winona Award for Broodmare of the Year for a record fourth consecutive season.

Currently, Lettucereason sits alongside Alldatglittersisgold (2013, 2014 and 2020), Liza Storm (1988, 1989 and 1990) and Maori Miss (1977, 1978 and 1979) as three-time winners of the coveted award.
Lettucereason has left the winners of $1,795,534 to date this season – and there’s six months of the racing calendar still remaining!
Leap To Fame has banked $1,410,250 from nine wins in 11 starts this year including the $1 million Miracle Mile, $1 million NZ Race By Sport Nation, $150,000 Kilmore Cup, $150,000 Cranbourne Cup and the $100,000 Ballarat Pacing Cup.
Swayzee has earned $376,900 from three wins in 10 starts in 2026 highlighted by the $250,000 A. G. Hunter Cup, while the three-year-old filly Senses has won three of her six starts this season for $65,958 and the exported Maximus Red has won twice for $29,150 in North America.
All told, Lettucereason has produced the winners of 161 races and a whopping $11,799,858 in lifetime stakemoney.
And, there’s two more of her offspring waiting in the wings!
She has a yearling filly by Bettor’s Delight named Claim To Fame, who was bought privately by a client of NZ South Island horseman Mark Jones, and a lovely weanling filly by Bettor’s Delight.
“I will be retaining the weanling filly and racing her myself,” Melbourne-based breeder-owner Justin Kahlefeldt said. “Lettucereason is now in foal to Bettor’s Delight.”
Kahlefeldt, the general manager commercial of the North American arm of global betting agency Sportsbet, currently owns 12 horses including six select broodmares.
Lettucereason was no slouch as a racemare either. She totted up 17 wins including four at Menangle and was three times placed at Group 1 level, banked $180,073 and took a mile mark of 1:55.9.
Her dam Left For Me (by Fake Left) won 10 races and produced 11 winners including the Victoria Cup winner and Australian 3YO of the Year For A Reason, now making a real impact as a sire.
