Bonds out to repeat the dose

By Harnesslink ·

Leading trainers Greg and Skye Bond maintained their strong winning streak at Gloucester Park on Tuesday night with a double, including a thrilling quinella result when Eastwood Crystal and Donegal Kahlum started from the two outside barriers and charged home from the rear in the 1730m Alltools Pace for harness racing mares.

Skye Bond said that the stable had an excellent chance of repeating the dose with Denny Crane and Mighty Major, who will start from the two outside barriers off the back line in the2130m XXXX Gold Pathway Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night.

“Denny Crane and Mighty Major have similar ability and they could produce a quinella result,” she said. ”There’s not much between them.”

Four-year-old Denny Crane, to be driven by Colin Brown, has won at ten of his 27 starts and five-year-old Mighty Major (Ryan Warwick) had 18 starts in New Zealand for six wins, six seconds and a third before making his Australian debut when last behind Three Bears in a field of 12 at Gloucester Park on January 5. He started from ten side of the back line and raced three wide in the final circuit.

Skye Bond said that there were excuses for Mighty Major’s first-up failure, saying: “He pulled up with feet issues, so we’ve been working on that and now we’re reasonably happy with his work at home.”

Denny Crane is a noted frontrunner, but he can also produce a strong finishing burst. Mighty Major impressed with his strength and versatility in New Zealand where he won once over 1609m, twice over 1950m and three times over 2600m.

Skye Bond said that she expected forward showings from in-form runners Bounty Eye, Millwood Faith, Assassinator, Ima Tragedy, Jungle Jewel, Burning and Mr Nickel.

She said that Bounty Eyre, a winner from the breeze over stablemate Black Mr Mach at Gloucester Park last Friday night, had sound prospects from barrier two in the 2130m James Squire 150 Lashes Pale Ale Pace. “He should be right up on the speed on Friday night,” she said. “The barrier certainly helps him.”

Four-year-old Assassinator looks hard to beat off the front line in the 2503mSinoclub Handicap after good placings behind Back On Board and Chief Thundercloud in stands on the past two Friday nights. “They were his first two starts in stands and they have been a good option for him,” Skye Bond said.
