Betterthancash takes the money with a great run

Canterbury harness racing driver Robbie Close handled the Regan Todd trained Betterthancash (Art Major) perfectly and won the thick end of the $18,000 stake in today’s Night ‘N Day/Tip Top Ice Cream Autumn Cup at Ascot Park.

Always Ticking ensured a steady tempo early. When Wag Star came looking for the top, Always Ticking got keen and started to hit her sulky, giving driver Carter Dalgety a hard steer. It looked like he was back driving at Yonkers. When Tim Williams and Sweet Diamond decided to get onto Always Ticking’s back, Close slotted into the one one. Wag Star took Betterthancash to the home straight and once Close let his horse run, he sprinted to the front to win by three and three quarter lengths from Miraculous.

BETTERTHANCASH REPLAY

“He’s quite a fast horse and there was a genuine enough tempo. He got a beautiful trip and didn’t have to go too early. I knew Wag Star wouldn’t lie down,” Close said in summarising the run.
