NZ Amateur Drivers Championship

By Harnesslink ·

This Friday night at Cambridge raceway sees the leading Amateur drivers in the country come together to do battle in the first two heats of the four heat series to be crowned the NZ Harness Racing Champion for 2016.

The top six drivers from each of the northern and southern competitions have been randomly allocated horses with the leading driver from each island doing well in the draw.

Although a relative newcomer to the Amateur ranks Sheryl Wigg has made a huge impact this season coming out on top in the North Island competition. Drawn to drive Our Southern Man in the first heat this twelve year old campaigner who has dominated the Amateur ranks in the North looks to give Wigg a strong start to the series. Her drive in the second heat is the last start winner in Chequeme Rosie which is another that is sure to see her prominent and adding to her points tally before the final two races at Rangiora on 29th May.

Alan Edge is the leading driver from the South Island competition and has the Jill Coppins trained runner Sage Creek who is well placed in the second heat of the night. A hallmark of edges driving this season has been the consistency of his results which is a great skill to bring into this type of competition.

Sheryl Wigg will drive in the colours of the Bush Inn & Bishopdale TAB's throughout the competition to designate her as the leading northern driver whilst Alan Edge will be adorned in the co-sponsor colours from the Harewood Tavern. The current New Zealand champion, Gavin Cook will compete in the NZ colours throughout the competition.
