There would be no more deserving winner at today's Hororata Trotting Club meeting at Methven than Sky City King.
The Terry McMillan trained pacer has produced a string of consistent results since beginning his career, but up until now that elusive first victory has eluded the seven-year-old.
Last Sunday at Geraldine, things looked good when he strode to the front only to be collared in the shadows of the post.
So with a little more luck tomorrow, surely his time is come.
“He’ll win a race one day, there’s never been much doubt about that,” McMillan said.
“While he probably should have won one by now, it hasn’t been a bad thing because we have been able to build a bit of confidence.”
Sky City King finally gets himself a decent barrier draw to work with today which should be beneficial to his chances, although don’t expect McMillan to be firing the gelding out of the gate.
“We will probably go back and try and slot in somewhere before getting a drag into it.
“I’m really happy with him this week, we don’t do a lot of work with him, but he’s really bright.”
McMillan has a decent shot at a winning double today with his other drive the very talented Rena Bay.
Trained by Nigel Perkins the three-year-old filly has any amount of ability and looked ready to run a big race with a good performance at last weekend’s Mount Hutt workouts on the Methven track.
The filly has had one career start in which not much went right, but McMillan is confident of a good run.
“She’s got a lot of speed, I really do have a bit of time for her.
“We are probably looking at building a bit of confidence with her too, but I’ve got no doubt she would be good enough to win if everything fell her way.”
A win by Rena Bay would end a six-year wait for Perkins who hasn’t trained a winner since Kamwood Blue Chip won at Addington in 2011.
