Apple Fritter serves just deserts to rivals

Plainville, MA — After coming up just short in a higher class last week, Apple Fritter (Pilot Discretion) served just deserts to his seven harness racing rivals on Tuesday (Aug. 19) afternoon after winning the $17,500 featured trot at Plainridge Park in a career-best effort.

Apple Fritter

Mitchell Cushing and Apple Fritter made the front after an overland grind that saw them reach the quarter in :27.3. But once in command, Apple Fritter marched smartly on the point for the next half mile while under duress from Kevlar CCL (Brett Beckwith), who was chasing in the breeze. But by the time the race reached the last turn, Apple Fritter had opened up a two length advantage that he took into the stretch, and then all the way to the wire where he won in a lifetime best 1:55.1.

APPLE FRITTER REPLAY

Apple Fritter ($5.80) is owned by Ray Lasky and his driver, Mitchell Cushing, who also trains the gelding.

Cushing also won one of the two $15,000 undercard trots with Stamped By Lindy (1:54.4, $10.60) who took a new lifetime mark for trainer Barry Segal and owners Nicholas Segal and Claude Bourgeois.

The other was won by Bella’s Love (1:56.1, $5.60) who was driven by Drew Monti and trained by Julia Eaton, who co-owns the mare with Bruce Weinstein, Edward Marks and Richard McDonough.

Monti was also the leading driver on Tuesday, winning three races on the card, two of which were trained by Eaton, who topped all trainers during the afternoon.

Live racing will resume at Plainridge Park on Thursday (Aug. 21) at 4 p.m. with a $8,985 carryover in the Wicked Hi-5 pentafecta in race six.
