The West Australian harness racing community is in shock with the sudden and unexpected death of respected horseman Mark Lewis aged 43.
The son of WA harness racing stalwarts Chris and Debra Lewis, Mark was well-known both locally and internationally for his involvement in the sport.
Lewis’ early career as a driver in Western Australia was brief – landing his first and only local win with Kurt Hanover at Pinjarra on January 5, 1998.
But Lewis forged a career in the United States between 1999 and 2014. He drove 245 winners from 2217 drives in America, amassing more than $2.7 million in prizemoney. As a trainer, he recorded 61 wins from 372 starters.
In recent years, Lewis returned to WA where he assisted his mother Debra with the preparation of the family’s pacers, most recently enjoying Group-level success with evergreen pacer Hampton Banner, of which Mark was a part-owner.
Tributes are expected to flow for a man remembered for his quiet determination, international success and deep love of horses.
